World Ice Golf Tips and Info

How to prepare for the championship

Good advice from Annika Östberg winner 2000/2001 To compete in a championship such as The Drambuie World Ice Golf Championship a little preparation is needed, which those who experience cold winters in their own country can do at home on your own home course. It's sometimes VERY cold in Uummannaq and therefore absolutely necessary to have warm clothes. Instead of wearing one very warm jacket however, itīs much better to wear several layers of clothes so that it is easier to swing and you can adjust how many layers of clothes you need at the beginning and then towards the end of the round. It īs also a good idea to practice using winter golf gloves, which is definitely a necessity when playing in Greenland. On your feet you need some warm boots -golf shoes are not a good idea! And donīt forget some good sunglasses for the bright sun! When you are all set to start playing some good advice is to always be aware of the beautiful nature which is to be seen everywhere! Playing golf on ice is not easy and the ball will make some crazy things but be patient and enjoy! A good sense of humour will always get you far. Good luck!

World Ice Golf Championship 2007

World Ice Golf has been around since the 17th century as evidenced by a painting by the Dutch painter Aert van der Neer (1603-1677) showing players with a club in their hands attempting to get a ball into a hole in the ice covering a frozen canal in Holland. At that time the game was called "kolven".

A Brief Retrospect

The World Ice Golf Championship was the brainchild of Mr. Arne Neimann, a local resident and hotel proprietor on a small island called Uummannaq, off Greenland's North West coast. In 1997 Mr. Neimann challenged architect Rolf-Henning Jensen to design Greenland's first golf course, which proved remarkably easy to do. With support of the local community, Uummannaq Municipality and Greenland Tourism the World Ice Golf Committee was set-up to establish the ice golf championship. The World Ice Golf Championship in Uummannaq has become a genuine and inimitable international golfing event.
