The pleasant rolling fairways of the Siwanoy golf course, its many traps, and its smooth but undulating greens, have attracted many famous golfers to the course. Almost from its beginning, the Siwanoy golf course has been widely known as a course that was “easy to play but hard to score on”. One usually pays dearly if he or she strays from the Siwanoy fairways. Siwanoy’s beautiful old trees that line the fairways often turn into impossible golf hazards by blocking clear shots to the greens. The wandering brooks that cross our fairways have always had a strange attraction for the erring shots of careless players, especially our ladies. It is a challenging course to play for both pro and duffer alike.

Siwanoy has been host to many well known tournaments over the years.

In 1916 the first P.G.A. Tournament was played here. This tournament was won by "Long Jim Barnes", who defeated Jock Hutchinson one up in the 36 hole final.

Among the many other tournaments played at Siwanoy over the years have been the New York State Amateur Championship, the New York State Women’s Championship, the Metropolitan Open Championship, the district qualifying round for the U.S. National Amateur Championship, the Westchester Professional Championship was played at Siwanoy in July 1974.

Famous professionals, Lee Trevino and Gary Player in very recent years, have each played and enjoyed the Siwanoy golf course.

Early in our Club history, our fellow member, John G. Anderson, was runner-up in the National Amateur Championship held at Detroit, Michigan in 1915. Mr. Anderson was defeated in the finals by Robert Gardner.

In 1922 another fellow Siwanoy member, Jess W. Sweetser, won the National Amateur Championship at Brookline, Massachusetts, defeating Chick Evens in the final match.

In 1926, the year of the 25th anniversary of Siwanoy, Jess Sweetser added much to that year’s anniversary celebration by his victory in the British Amateur Championship, with the distinction of being the first native-born American to bring that title to the United States.

Johnny Farrel, who won the U.S. Open Championship at Olympia Field, Chicago in 199928 by defeating Bobby Jones in the finals, was brought up at Siwanoy under the supervision of Tom Kerrigan. Johnny started as a caddy and worked in our golf shop with his brother, James Farrell, who was caddy master at the time.

Art Wall and Tom Nieporte, also were assistants to Tom Kerrigan in the 1950s and went on to win some of the recent major tournaments.

Other excellent golfers of Siwanoy, men and women alike, have upheld the Club’s reputation for developing fine golfers, as evidenced by their achievements in tournament competition.

Although Siwanoy has always had outstanding golfers to maintain its reputation of golfing excellence, it is its regular average, run-of-the-mill golfer, who over the years have developed and kept Siwanoy’s finest golfing traditions of friendship, good fellowship and fun for its members and their guests. As one rereads the old documents describing the activities of the Club in years past, the warm glow of this friendly Club spirit shines through.

Golf is a fascinating game. It has taken me nearly forty years to discover that I can't play it. - Ted Ray, Golf - My Slice of Life, 1972
